Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 3 cups bread flour All-purpose flour can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 cup sourdough starter You can use store-bought or homemade.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted Vegetable oil or vegan butter can be used for a dairy-free option.
  • 1/4 cup sugar Honey or maple syrup can replace sugar.
  • 1 cup warm water Warm milk can be used for richer flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Add the sourdough starter and melted butter to the yeast mixture, stirring to combine.
  • Gradually add the bread flour and salt. Mix until a dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  • On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
  • Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into small balls. Place them in a greased baking dish.
  • Let the balls rise again, covered, for about 30-45 minutes, until puffed.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Brush with melted butter before serving.

Notes

These rolls stay soft and tasty the next day. Experiment with flavors like garlic herb, cheese-stuffed, or sweet rolls. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
