To Serve

  • coarse pretzel salt For sprinkling on top.
  • Mustard or cheese sauce To serve with pretzels.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In another bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add this flour mixture to the yeast mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until it has doubled in size.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add the baking soda to the water.
  • Divide the risen dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist it into a pretzel shape.
  • Boil each pretzel in the baking soda water for about 30 seconds, then place them on the baking sheet. Sprinkle with coarse salt and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

For an extra touch, brush the pretzels with melted butter right after baking. Experiment with toppings like everything bagel seasoning or garlic salt for extra flavor.
