Ingredients

For the Base

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour You could use whole wheat flour for a slightly healthier option.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar Replace with brown sugar for a more caramelized flavor.
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast If using active dry yeast, activate it in warm water before adding to flour.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted For a lighter option, substitute a portion with unsweetened applesauce.
  • 1 cup warm milk Ensure the milk is warm, not hot, for yeast growth.
  • 1 large egg

To Serve

  • Butter for brushing

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Whisk until well mixed.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together warm milk, melted butter, and the egg. Whisk until fully combined.
  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture and stir until a soft dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles, approximately 30 minutes.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) while the dough is rising.
  • Once risen, punch the dough down gently, divide, and shape into balls. Place rolls in a greased baking dish.
  • Let rolls rise again in the baking dish for about 15 minutes.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Brush the tops with melted butter before serving.

Notes

For flavor variations, consider adding minced garlic to the butter for garlic rolls, or mixing in dried herbs or shredded cheese. They are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven but can be stored for up to 3 days or frozen for up to three months.
