  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease cake pans.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, mix buttermilk, oil, eggs, food coloring, and vanilla.
  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  • Divide the batter into three separate bowls. Color each bowl with different amounts of food coloring to create an ombre effect.
  • Pour each colored batter into the prepared pans.

Baking

  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Cooling and Layering

  • Let the cakes cool completely.
  • Layer the cakes starting from the darkest color to the lightest and spread cream cheese frosting between each layer and on the top.
  • Decorate as desired and serve.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Individual slices can be frozen for later enjoyment. Make sure your ingredients are at room temperature for best results.
