Ingredients

For the Beef Base

  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean) You can use 90% lean for less fat.
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced Yellow or sweet onions work best for caramelizing.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Add after the onions are well caramelized.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil Can swap for avocado oil or a light vegetable oil.

For the Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Adds umami and salt.
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce Reduce if sodium-sensitive and add low-sodium beef broth.

To Serve

  • 4 pieces hamburger buns Whole wheat buns or toasted rolls are fine.
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese Gruyère is a close alternative.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley Optional for garnish.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering.
  • Add the thinly sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10–12 minutes until golden and caramelized.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until fully browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.
  • If there is excess fat, drain it from the pan.
  • Stir in Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce, then add thyme, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes so the flavors meld and the sauce thickens slightly.
  • Toast hamburger buns lightly until golden brown.
  • Scoop the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun, top with shredded Swiss cheese, and cover with the top bun.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley if desired before serving.

Notes

Use medium heat to caramelize onions slowly to bring out sweetness. For evenly browned beef, break into small pieces early. If you desire extra melty cheese, place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler for 1–2 minutes.
