Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Make sure butter is softened for a creamy mixture.
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • Red and pink food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles or colored sugar (optional) For decoration.

Preparation

  • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, beat the butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract together until creamy.
  • Mix in the egg until well combined.
  • Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Divide the dough in half, and mix in food coloring to one half if desired.
  • Roll each portion into a log and wrap in parchment paper. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Slice the chilled dough into 1/4 inch thick pieces, place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and sprinkle with decorative sugar if desired.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are golden.
  • Let cool before serving.

Notes

Store these cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for about a week. Freeze the dough logs before slicing for longer storage.
