Hamburger Steaks with Brown Gravy

Ingredients
  

For the Base

  • 1 pound fresh ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey or chicken.
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs For gluten-free, use gluten-free breadcrumbs or crushed oats.
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped Can substitute with green onions or shallots for a milder flavor.
  • to taste salt Season generously.
  • to taste pepper Season generously.

For the Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups beef broth Can substitute with low-sodium or homemade broth.
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce A splash of soy sauce can be a substitute.
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter

To Serve

  • Mashed potatoes or rice Optional, but highly recommended.

Instructions
 

Mix the Patty Ingredients

  • In a bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, salt, and pepper. Mix until everything is well integrated.

Form the Patties

  • Shape the mixture into evenly sized patties, about 3/4-inch thick.

Brown the Patties

  • Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook until browned on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side.

Make the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt the butter and sprinkle in the flour. Cook for 1 minute, stirring continuously to ensure it doesn't burn.
  • Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Cook until the gravy thickens, about 3-4 minutes.

Return the Patties

  • Add the browned hamburger steaks back to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and let simmer for another 2-3 minutes.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Plate the hamburger steaks with gravy over the top and serve alongside mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

Use a good quality beef broth for rich flavor. Garnish with fresh parsley for added color.
