Ingredients

For the Base

  • 1 lb ground chicken Ground turkey can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 onion, chopped Use any type of onion.
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped Other veggies can be substituted.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Fresh garlic is recommended.

For the Sauce

  • 1 cup ketchup Low-sugar ketchup can be used.
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

To Serve

  • 4 hamburger buns Can use whole grain or gluten-free buns.

Instructions

Cooking the Chicken

  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground chicken until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula. Make sure the chicken is no longer pink.

Adding Vegetables

  • Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes until the onions become translucent.

Mixing in the Sauce

  • Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all the flavors.

Simmering

  • Allow the mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until heated through.

Serving

  • Spoon the chicken mixture onto hamburger buns and serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t rush the sautéing process, and taste as you go to adjust seasoning as needed. Let the mixture rest off the heat for a few minutes before serving for the best flavor.
