  • 1 cup unsalted butter Make sure the butter is at room temperature for easier mixing.
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can be replaced with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version.
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt If using salted butter, reduce added salt to 1/4 teaspoon.
  • 1 cup chocolate chips For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate chips.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth.
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  • Combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture until just blended.
  • Fold in the chocolate chips.
  • Drop spoonfuls of the batter onto ungreased cookie sheets.

Baking

  • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until set.
  • Let cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks.

Notes

These cookies are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven, served plain or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Freeze for longer storage up to three months.
