Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Whole wheat flour can be substituted.
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar A granulated sugar substitute can be used for a lower-calorie version.
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk Make your own buttermilk by mixing 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice with 1 1/2 cups of milk.
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted Coconut oil can be used as a dairy-free alternative.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Swirl

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

For the Sauce

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened Ensure cream cheese is softened for easy blending.
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  • Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined, avoiding overmixing.
  • In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until combined.

Cooking

  • Pipe the cinnamon mixture onto the batter in the waffle iron after pouring in about 1/2 cup of the batter.
  • Close the waffle iron and cook according to manufacturer's instructions for approximately 3-4 minutes until golden and crisp.

Serving

  • In a bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth, then gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, mixing until pourable.
  • Serve the waffles warm, drizzling the cream cheese glaze on top.

Notes

These waffles can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. For freezing, place cooled waffles in a single layer and freeze until solid.
