Batter

  • 120 g all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda
  • 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 113 g unsalted butter, melted
  • 200 g light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 180 g chopped fresh apples peeled or unpeeled

  • 60 g chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 40 g raisins or dried cranberries

Instructions
 

  • Step 1 – Prepare the baking dish
    Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8x8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper.
  • Step 2 – Mix the dry ingredients
    In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Step 3 – Combine wet ingredients
    In a separate large bowl, whisk melted butter and brown sugar until smooth. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
  • Step 4 – Add apples
    Fold in the chopped apples. The mixture will look thick and chunky, which is exactly what you want.
  • Step 5 – Combine everything
    Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Stir gently until just combined. If using nuts or dried fruit, fold them in now.
  • Step 6 – Bake
    Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Step 7 – Cool and serve
    Allow the apple brownies to cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

Choose the right apples like Honeycrisp, Gala, or Granny Smith. Don’t overmix the batter to maintain a tender texture. For extra variation, try adding white chocolate chips, oats, or drizzling caramel on top.
